In this episode of The Struggling Entrepreneur, Dave Jackson from The School of Podcasting shares his experiences as a podcaster, educator, musician and podcast consultant. He is a dynamic personality who, as a podcaster, is currently hosting seven (that’s right, seven!) podcasts. Besides the School of Podcasting’s Morning Announcements, he has a premium membership site for subscribers to his School of Podcasting, which is called School of Podcasting-Students Only (and, yes, I am a subscriber). In addition, he has his own podcast for musicians, which is called Musician’s Cooler. As a podcast consultant, he hosts a site describing his services called Podcast FastPass (which I myself have used for several projects, including this podcast series and our productivity podcast called Gain Control of Your Day). He has launched a Podcast series in 2007 called Planning Your Podcast, using the PremiumCast system. In addition, as a professional web designer, he hosts the podcast filled with hints and tips for the “do-it-yourself” webmaster, and it is called Weekly Web Tools. To get a full listing of all the podcasts which he hosts, you can visit his website of Personal Podcast Coach.

To add to all these podcasts, he still presents a diary of his experiences in Building a Better Dave podcast, as well as a college study companion music podcast, and finally a humorous comparison of musical pieces called Best of the Worst.

In this episode, we explore the question: “when is the best time to form a legal entity for your entrepreneurial business?”

From Dave Jackson’s perspective, this issue involves knowing when your Business is becoming successful. In addition to the financial implications, Dave also suggests other aspects of moving from a “dba” to a legal entity, such as an LLC.

As a side note, Dave also interviewed me during the Podcast and New Media Expo in Ontario, California, where we discussed the differences between Podcamp unconferences and regular Expos–and the benefits of a Podcamp to “newbie” podcasters. Also, during the time of this conference, I had the opportunity to take Dave Jackson as my guest to the Cielito Lindo Restaurant in South El Monte, California. As a musician himself, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience of dining and attending a performance of the Mariachi Sol de Mexico, the musical group led by Jose Hernandez. As a guitar player himself, Dave really enjoyed “talking shop” and was in his own element with the lead guitarrist of the Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Jesus Hernandez.

Thanks to Dave for sharing his challenges as a recent Struggling Entrepreneur. We congratulate him on his growing business and we thank him for his suggestions in recognizing when a Business should now take the next step and become a legal entity.

In this episode of The Struggling Entrepreneur, I review my personal top 5 picks of resources that I discovered at the Podcast and New Media Expo (and strictly from my perspective). Please be advised that 2 of these top 5 picks were not even exhibitors at the event, but the value that they bring to the Entrepreneur merited them as a spot in my top 5 picks:

1. Best pick and value: Noble Transcription Service (I have used them in the past) — a good service at a competitive price point for any small business owner, entrepreneur, podcaster or online marketer. I have also used them for another podcast that I have published, Gain Control of Your Day.

2. Camtasia Studio from TechSmith: a required resource if you ever need to demonstrate anything on your personal computer screen, or if you need synchronized PowerPoint slides with audio.

3. 1NetMarketingService from Terri Romine. This resource can assist any small business owner or entrepreneur or podcaster or online marketer in validating your idea, or setting you up with online transactions for payment, e-commerce, affiliate programs, etc. Terri Romine was interviewed in episode 08 of The Struggling Entrepreneur.

4. PremiumCast from Paul Colligan: Whether you choose the free service or subscribe to the Pro or Viral offerings, this will allow you to get into podcasting either for passion, or for profit, and especially for affiliate marketing. Brought to you by the Podcast Partnership.

5. The Zoom H2 Portable Recorder from Samson: Even though Samson did not exhibit in a booth as they did last year, the presence and use of this handy recorder for podcasters was everywhere at the Expo. I myself used it for my interviews and podcasts, and I feel that is merited a spot in my top 5 picks.

I created these finalist of “my picks” during the 5 days in which I was in Ontario for podcast events– The Podcast Secrets Reunion on 26 September; the Podcast Academy 6 session on 27 September; and the Podcast and New Media Expo on 28-30 September.
